Overview - PCI SIGHT WORDS 1 PRINT


PCI Sight Words 1 and 2 offer teachers an innovative way to reach beginning readers of all ages. These two reproducible programs, by PCI's Janie Haugen-McLane, Jill Haney, and Cynthia Hernandez, teach commonly used words using high-interest, rhyming poems about "real-life" topics. Sight Words 1 teaches 144 words in 36 lessons, and the new Sight Words 2 covers 96 additional words in 24 lessons. The two sets can be used individually or together as a stand-alone reading curriculum or as a supplement.

Program overview The program features a 12-step routine that guides teachers in using the four major learning modalities (visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic) to teach each lesson's words. Each week, the teacher presents four new sight words, first through the context of a poem and then in isolation. Illustrated scenes on each poem poster help students with limited or no reading skills comprehend the poem's meaning. The poem's four underlined sight words have corresponding, illustrated flash cards that use the context of the poem to give each word meaning.

For teachers who already have Sight Words 1, Sight Words 2 uses the same proven methods to introduce students to 96 new sight words. The two programs can be purchased individually or as a set.

My students loved reading the short passages each week. After awhile they began to notice all the sight words they could identify throughout other lessons. I also noticed an improvement in their writing skills.

Advantages

Student friendly passages that allow all students to read successfully. The curriculum addresses multiple intelligence with the variety of teacher guided activities.

 
Disadvantages

Students are asked to write the words five times each, which limits the frequent use of each sight word in their writing. Suggestion: Have students write sentences for each sight word or develop a short story as a class with the sight words.
