Overview - THINGS PEOPLE DO
Things People Do, by Rosie Simms, is a fun, easy-to-play game that builds expressive language skills and life skills by engaging students in discussions about everyday activities. The game board features 30 full-color illustration of common activities, such as shopping for groceries, brushing teeth, and using a computer. As students answer key questions about each activity, they enhance their understanding of the many aspects involved in completing the tasks and improve their ability to describe situations using action words.
Focus on actions Since the object of the game is to help students learn about everyday activities, each illustration on the game board shows a person in the midst of completing a particular task. To further emphasize life skills, safety precautions are illustrated. For example, the person taking the cake out of the oven is wearing oven mitts.
Everyday activities The 30 activities featured on the game board are common, "real-world" tasks, such as completing household chores, working on hobbies, and grooming. Some of the activities covered in the game include caring for a pet, doing homework, making a bed, playing a sport, taking a bus, and wrapping a present.
How game works A student lands on a game-board square and identifies the activity illustrated. The student then spins for one of these four questions:
- What do people need to do this?
- Where do people do this?
- How do people do this?
- Why do people do this?
Students score a point for correctly answering a question. To help students succeed, suggested cues and prompts are included in the Teacher's Guide.
VISUAL CLUES
The realistic illustrations on the game board allow students with limited or no reading skills to play the game successfully. To further cue students who struggle with reading, each question on the spinner is accompanied by a recognizable icon.
